Barra Lodge Aerial View |
Barra Lodge is situated some 485 kilometres north of Maputo, and only 30 minutes from the historical town of Inhambane. The Lodge enjoys secluded and unspoilt beaches, and is bordered by the Inhambane estuary and the Indian Ocean.
The Lodge is set amongst coconut groves, and there is a choice of accommodation. The 20 family casitas are made of thatch, brick and reeds, which created a charming atmosphere. Some units have sea views and all are a stone's throw from the beach, and all are equipped with 1 double and 2 single beds, and have en suite facilities. In addition there are some self-catering cottages (2 or 3 bedroom), which all have an open-plan living area, kitchen, and en-suite facilities. This makes Barra an excellent choice for families, and there are also suitable activities for the whole family.
The restaurant prides itself in fresh seafood dishes, such as prawns, calamari and line fish. You can your meal indoors or outdoors on the patio overlooking the pool. You can also have light meals at the Beach Bar, which also hosts sumptuous Wednesday and Saturday dinner buffets. The Bar is also popular for sunset drinks, and also hosts beach volleyball, pub games, and is a great place to just relax.
The swimming pool is also popular, and has a kids paddling pool and Jacuzzi.
You can enjoy a variety of activities at Barra: there is a fully equipped PADI dive centre; a 33 foot catamaran for day trips to Pansy Island, as well as diving and snorkelling trips; you can also enjoy a sail on a traditional Dhow. There is a neighbouring Mangrove swamp adjacent to the lodge, which can be explored by boat and on foot; you can also enjoy a guided horse ride on the beach; there is also guided quad biking through the coconut plantations; and for water lovers, there are a number of activities, from hobie-cat and laser dingy, to paddle ski’s and surfboards.
Inhambane itself is steeped in history. This was the most southerly Arab trading post in Africa, and it was here that Vasco da Gama landed in 1534. The town boasts cathedrals, old colonial Portuguese architecture, African culture and local markets.
The lodge also had experienced resident fishermen, and there are a good number of game fish in the area. The ski boat is fully equipped with tackle for an excellent fishing experience – with the preferred policy of catch and release.
